Terms of use
The terms on which you may use this website, and what it does and does not create between you and the firm.
Last updated October 14, 2026 · Version 2026-10-3
1. Who operates this website
This website is operated by HILEX LAW ("the firm", "we"), a law firm in British Columbia whose lawyers are members of the Law Society of British Columbia. HiLex Law is the name under which the firm offers the services described here.
The firm is not a government office and is not connected with any court.
2. General information, not legal advice
The pages of this website describe the law of British Columbia and of Canada in general terms. They are not legal advice and may not fit your situation. Do not act, or decide not to act, on the strength of this website alone.
3. When we become your lawyer
Visiting this website, sending the request form or speaking with our staff does not make the firm your lawyer. A lawyer-client relationship begins only when a lawyer of the firm has confirmed that we can act for you and you have accepted a written agreement that sets out the work and the fee.
Before that, please do not send us confidential information. We may already act for someone whose interests conflict with yours, and what you send before we have checked may not be protected.
4. What we ask of you
Give us accurate and complete information. Tell us promptly if something changes. Keep the access to your client portal to yourself. Do not use this website to send unlawful material or to interfere with its operation.
5. Fees
The fees shown on this website are in Canadian dollars and do not include tax. GST and PST are added to legal fees. Court fees and other amounts paid to third parties for your matter are charged at cost and are not taxed by us.
A fee applies to you only when it is stated in the written agreement you accept. A fee shown as "from" is a starting point; the fee for your matter is confirmed in that agreement.
Money you pay in advance is held in the firm's trust account and is transferred only after the work has been done and billed, as the rules of the Law Society of British Columbia require.
How to pay is shown in your client portal with each request for payment. If you tell us in the portal that you have paid, that is a message to us: a payment counts once we have received the money. We do not accept cash.
6. No promise of result or timing
We do not promise that a court will grant an order, that an agreement will be upheld, or that anything will be done by a particular date. Courts and registries set their own timelines.
7. Documents you send
Documents are sent to us through the client portal, after we have agreed to act and invited you. By sending a document you confirm that you are entitled to share it with us. Please do not email identity documents or court papers.
8. Your client portal, and signing in it
Your way into the client portal is yours alone: an invitation, an activation code that we give you by telephone or in person, and a code that we email to you each time you sign in. There is no password. If you think somebody else has used your portal, tell us at once.
Where you sign an agreement in the portal, you ask for a code, which we send to you at that moment, and you type it with your full legal name. You and we agree that this has the same effect as a signature on paper. We keep a record of the signature: the time, the code, and the device and internet address it came from.
Wills, powers of attorney, representation agreements and agreements between spouses are not signed in the portal. They are signed before witnesses, as the law requires for each.
9. Availability
We work to keep this website and the client portal available, but they may be interrupted for maintenance or for reasons outside our control. If the portal is unavailable when you need it, contact us by phone.
10. Content of this website
The text and design of this website belong to the firm. You may read and print pages for your own use. Please do not copy them for publication or for commercial use without our written permission.
11. Our responsibility
To the extent the law allows, the firm is not liable for loss that results from relying on the general information on this website, or from an interruption of the website.
Nothing in these terms limits the duties the firm owes to its clients under the law or under the rules of the Law Society of British Columbia.
12. Privacy
How we collect, use and protect personal information is described in the privacy notice, which forms part of these terms.
13. Languages
This website and the client portal are offered in English and in Farsi. A Farsi text is a translation, there to help you read. Where the two differ, the English text is the one that applies. Agreements with the firm are made in English, and a Farsi translation may be shown beside them.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute about them is to be brought before the courts of British Columbia.
